The absolute best price on a Zoom H4N can be found at here at the Amazon.com. One of the most versatile pieces of kit any multimedia maven can have in their arsenal is the Zoom H4N Handy portable digital recorder. With dual XLR inputs and improved crystal clear microphone preamps, this small field recorder does the work of larger more expensive recorders in its class extremely well. I have found it to be indispensible as an independent film maker who has been swept up in the DSLR revolution of the last five years.

Whether you are shooting with a Canon 5d Mark II, Canon 7d or the venerable Panasonic GH1 or GH2, you know that the onboard sound of any of these recorders is absolute crap. This is where the Zoom absolutely shines for having a small footprint, a rugged rubberized coat, and very capable and crisp sounding onboard mics. I find it easy to get great sound either using it as the main mic source, or feeding audio to the Zoom H4N through a wireless Sennheiser setup.

The zoom is equally impressive in the music category. A virtual studio on the go, musicians have access to a 4 track recorder that is excellent for roughing out ideas, but has the audio quality to produce a finished product. Containing compressors on every input and the ability to bounce an infinite number of times you can’t go wrong picking up a Zoom.

It used to be that filmmakers and musicians would spend thousands of dollars on a device like this, and be forced to put their music on some funky tape format. The Zoom H4N is under $350 (and that price is highway robbery) but offers big boy sound quality to indie artists of film and music. You can pick one up at Amazon for under $300 bucks and be sure to receive a quality unit from a quality vendor. Be sure to check out some of the accessories that you’re sure to need such as a Furryhead Windscreen effective in cutting out wind noise for outdoor.

Zoom H4N Or The Sony PCM-M10

by on July 31, 2011

If you are looking for a portable digital recorder to use in conjunction with a DSLR, depending on your budget you will most likely be looking at the Zoom H4N, or something akin to the Sony PCM-M10 as an affordable option to an outboard option for audio capture.  The first thing to note is the price difference between the two, which as a budget conscious film maker is usually the first concern.  The Zoom H4N floats at right around 299.00 on average, and the PCM-M10 is priced at an attractive $229.00.

Sonically I prefer the preamps on the Zoom hands down, it has a much fuller sound when using the internal mics.  Another item I prefer for on location sound is the XLR inputs of the Zoom H4N, which makes using an external mic a plug and play operation.  It’s one of the small professional features that makes the Zoom more pro than some of the other recorders in its class.  It also makes the Zoom more versatile as many musicians use it as an audio interface.  The more cables you have to use to match signals, the more degradation you will experience of the final signal.  The PCM-M10 requires a Female XLR to mini stereo cable which is a pain in the rear if you forget to pack your bag one day.

Lastly for location work the Zoom H4N allows for phantom powering of microphones which is handy on set.  Of course in full disclosure phantom power drains the AA batteries like Trueblood vampire on virgin jugular.  The PCM-M10 advertises phantom power but its 2v, and not 48V like the Zoom.  This means that Sony PCM-M10 will need another device to provide phantom power, which is a drawback requiring more cables, connectors and resources, when we intend to keep our audio kit small.

I like the PCM-M10 for anything non film related.  Next to the zoom the seventy some odd dollars you’ll save will leave you with a unit that is crippled for film work in the PCM-M10.
